Credit

Unit of Credit
Academic credit through LifeSpring is measured in units of credit. Units of credit are assigned to courses on the basis of the “Carnegie unit”, which is more commonly known as the “quarter unit”.

Specifically, a unit of credit represents 10 hours of classroom instruction and 20-30 hours of outside preparation by the student (30-40 clock hours total per credit)

  • A 1 unit of credit sub-course is the equivalent of 10 hours of instruction and 20-30 hrs. of preparation (30-40 clock hours total).
  • A 4 unit of credit course is the equivalent of 40 hours of instruction and 80-120 hrs. of preparation (120-160 hours total).
  • For an internship or practicum, students earn 1 unit of credit per 40 hours of qualified and verified field experience.

Transfer of Credit*

Students may request to have credits transferred from other institutions by having an official transcript sent to the LifeSpring office. All credits earned from Ministries Training System, Summit School of Theology, and Midwest Bible College will be accepted.

Credits from other institutions will be accepted upon the following conditions:

  •  Student earned a grade of C or better.
  • Credits are from equivalent courses required for student’s program of study. Transfer of credits from non-evangelical institutions may be contingent upon student completion of additional assignments, integrative essay and/or a competency exam.
  • The institution is accredited by a regional accrediting association, TRACS, ABHE, or ATS. Credit from non-accredited schools or schools accredited by other agencies may be evaluated and accepted at LifeSpring’s discretion.

Many institutions of higher learning award credit based on the “semester-unit” system. When applying semester credits to LifeSpring certificates or diplomas, the following equivalency scale is to be used:

     1 semester unit = 1 ½ quarter units
     2 semester units = 3 quarter units
     3 semester units = 4 ½ quarter units
     4 semester units = 6 quarter units

Credit by Demonstrated Competency*

LifeSpring may award equivalency credit for knowledge and skills developed in non-traditional educational environments. Credit is awarded on the basis of careful evaluation of student knowledge. A fee is charged for evaluation and for credit accepted.

*In order to receive a certificate or diploma from LifeSpring School of Ministry, 51 percent of total credits must be earned through LifeSpring.

Audit

Students who wish to attend a modular class without working for or expecting to receive formal credit may register to audit the course. Students who audit a course may not participate in class, (exceptions are at Instructor’s discretion) do not take examinations, and do not submit papers. Completion of course-work textbook assignments is recommended; some courses may require textbook reading and pre- and/or post-work participation. Students may only audit approved lecture-type courses.

Students may not register to audit a course until registration for credit has closed, in order to give priority to students needing to take the course for credit. Students may not attend any course without registering for either credit or audit. Students may not change or upgrade an audit class to credit.

Ministers may audit a class for NAMC classroom hours.

Online courses are not available for audit.
